Belle Bourgogne Part 2: Our village

Belle Bourgogne Part 2: Our village

Merci beaucoup for joining me as we continue our week in Belle Bourgogne. Let’s head off to explore the village of Savigny-lés-Beaune.

The view of our property from outside the big blue gates

Just outside the large entrance gates and around the side of our accommodation, we discovered an old covered lavoir (wash house). Imagine doing your weekly clothes washing here. Lovely on a hot day but not so much fun during winter.

In the village there is a boulangerie, for bread and yummy pastries plus a mini market selling some necessities. There are a number of winemakers with their domaines in the village selling wine, an information centre and some restaurants. A short drive to the outskirts of Beaune and you will find a large E.Leclerc supermarket. There is also a weekly food market in Beaune on Saturday mornings held in the covered market hall, Place de la Halle and surrounding streets.

As a winemaking village, it was not unusual to see tractors driving the streets as the move from one vineyard to another. The village itself is surrounded by gently rolling hills covered in vines.

Surrounded by vineyards. Burgundy or Bourgogne is a famous wine region of France

We enjoyed the variety of interesting buildings with different architecture. Some rustic and others very grand.

We even discovered the old railway station, L’Ancienne Gare de Savigny-lés-Beaune, once part of a narrow gauge railway line that ran from Beaune to Dijon.

Of course, like most villages in France, Savigny-lés-Beaune has a Monument aux Morts, to commemorate the losses of WWI, where we paused to show our respect.

The cemetery is always a fascinating place to spend some time noting the generations of local names and pondering what their stories were.

Evening walks

Our walks were often in the evenings. It was very peaceful and we enjoyed the delightful vistas of the surrounding vineyards in the golden evening light.

Château de Savigny-lés-Beaune

The village even has it’s very own fairytale château. Please join me next time as we explore Château de Savigny-lés-Beaune. À bientôt!
